just a week away &#8211; \u00a0we will be leaving on another multi-week bicycle trip; it is high time I wrap up this up.\u00a0 Here are the FAQs.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong><em>Why ride across Canada?<\/em><\/strong><br \/>\nIt&#8217;s my country. \u00a0Where else can I cycle over 7,000 km without risk of war, meet people who share the same country, speak the same languages, where I can cross peaceful borders, see two oceans, cross two mountain ranges, plains, three great lakes, rugged glacial stripped rocks, and still be at home. \u00a0Why not ride across Canada?<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">I should not fail to mention that while travelling I also I dropped in and enjoyed the hospitality of my generous neighbours in\u00a0North Dakota, Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Michigan.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong><em>What is the most memorable place in Canada?<\/em><\/strong><br \/>\nThe first views of Lake Huron were the most wonderful. \u00a0I felt I was arriving at home with the familiar but uniquely beautiful views of rocky shores, islands and the sun rising on the shores of Manitoulin Island.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong><em>Where were the best places for riding on the route?<\/em><\/strong><br \/>\nThe stretch from Burlington, Ontario along the Waterfront Trail through to the east side of Montreal along La Route Verte in Quebec were the best cycling paths along the route. \u00a0(I would have included La Route Verte paths south of the St. Lawrence to Quebec City but on the trip I followed the La Route Verte north of the St. Lawrence which followed along the shoulder of the King&#8217;s Road.)<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong><em>How many kilometers did I ride per day?<\/em><\/strong><br \/>\nI spent 58 days riding my bicycle and covered roughly 7540\u00a0kilometers averaging <strong>130 km<\/strong> <strong>per day.<\/strong> \u00a0 Although I did not take regular rest days the duration included 6 non-riding days; 5 days in my home in Kitchener, Ontario and 1 day touring in Gross Morne in NL. \u00a0 When factoring the non-riding days the average daily distance drops to 117 kilometers per day.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong><em>Was it a good idea to go on your own?<\/em><\/strong><br \/>\nI did not stick to my original itinerary, route or schedule. \u00a0I changed things on a whim continually &#8211; where to eat, where to sleep; I stuck to my own pace &#8211; I&#8217;m slower than some and faster than others.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Shorter trips \u00a0&lt;14 days would work out very well with equally paced companions who can manage to get the time off work. \u00a0But for this trip me travelling solo was ideal.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Regarding safety: \u00a0Riding companions can&#8217;t stop cars. \u00a0 Any way you cut it cycling is a risky activity. \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0And\u00a0I carried a\u00a0Spot Gen3.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong><em>Did you get tired?\u00a0<\/em><\/strong><br \/>\nThe first couple of weeks were the toughest. \u00a0After that the body adapts (and so did my Brooks saddle). \u00a0 A good meal and a good night&#8217;s rest were sufficient to keep the body going. \u00a0By the end the daily ride did not feel difficult.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong><em>Did you benefit from the westerly wind?<\/em><\/strong><br \/>\nI am not sure. \u00a0The winds were in my favour from Ontario to Newfoundland. \u00a0However I faced strong headwinds when crossing the prairies which slowed progress by a few days.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong><em>Where was the most bicycle friendly city on the route?<\/em><\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Calgary, Alberta<\/strong> &#8211; hands down.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong><em>Best and widest shoulders on the road cycling?<\/em><\/strong><br \/>\nAlong <strong>highway #2 stretching from Minnesota to Michigan<\/strong>. \u00a0 NOTE: \u00a0This does not include the towns and the cities where the shoulders were revoked.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong><em>Most dangerous place to bicycle?<\/em><\/strong><br \/>\nThe <strong>overpass on highway #555 from Duluth to Superior Wisconson<\/strong> when highway #2 was under construction. \u00a0 Some of the places I found myself in Vancouver were a close second. \u00a0 There may have been safer routes which would have taken much longer.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em><strong>What were your most memorable songs or artists?<\/strong><\/em><br \/>\nI took a small Sony Walkman mp3 player with me to keep me company. \u00a0It had about 24 hours worth of songs that replayed every few days. \u00a0All the songs were selected by hand by my daughter Laura and my son David. \u00a0 They were all good songs; some grew on me and others not so much.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Most loved song: \u00a0A Case of You &#8211; Joni Mitchell (it was better when I didn&#8217;t think about the words)<\/li>\n<li style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Most beautiful voice: Nora Jones<\/li>\n<li style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Most Jaded Artist: Rodriguez<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong><em>Did you camp every day?<\/em><\/strong><br \/>\nI intended to sleep in my tent about 50% of the nights. \u00a0Instead I only camped out in my tent about 1\/4 of the nights. \u00a0Generally this was because my original itinerary changed and at the end of the days I often found myself in towns where there were no camp sites.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong><em>How often did you cook your own food?<\/em><\/strong><br \/>\nRarely. \u00a0Even nights when I slept in my tent I would go out of my way to find a good place to eat prepared food. \u00a0This was for a number of reasons: I didn&#8217;t want to carry much food, my camping food wasn&#8217;t that tasty, \u00a0I needed lots of calaries, and I was tired and lazy after riding.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em><strong>What animals did you see?<\/strong><\/em><br \/>\nI kept a running total in my head. \u00a0 The accuracy has slowly leaked over time. \u00a0This is close&#8230;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: left;\">Deer &#8211; 3 dead, BC<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: left;\">Moose &#8211; 3 alive, NB<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: left;\">Beavers &#8211; 3 dead, NB\/NS<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: left;\">Elk &#8211; 2 alive, AB<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: left;\">Pronghorn &#8211; ~ 20 alive, AB<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: left;\">Skunks &#8211; 3 dead,<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: left;\">other rodents &#8211; lots &#8211; some dead most alive<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: left;\">Birds &#8211; a few dead &#8211; most alive<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: left;\">Bear\u00a0&amp; Cougars\u00a0&#8211; none<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: left;\">Most dangerous animal &#8211; drivers &#8211; alive<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em><strong>Gear?<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Lists of stuff.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><!--more--><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>Bike:<\/strong> Trek FX 7.3, 2012 \u00a0<em>triple chain ring crank with an eight speed cassette<\/em><\/li>\n<li style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>Bike Accessories\/Non-Stock Items<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>Saddle:<\/strong> Brooks B17 &#8211; <em>After\u00a0about 2 weeks to wear in this saddle was excellent. \u00a0Now this is simply the best thing to site on &#8211; better than a couch.<\/em><\/li>\n<li style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>Tires:<\/strong> Schwalbe Marathon Mondial Touring Tyre &#8211;\u00a0<em>Great tires except I had one bad wire bead that slipped off the rim. \u00a0 Because of this incident\u00a0I carried one spare foldable tire. \u00a0 I had only two flats in ~10,000km. \u00a0<\/em><\/li>\n<li style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>Rear Rack:<\/strong> Bontrager Backrack Deluxe &#8211;\u00a0<em>NOTE: This rack cracked after ~4000 kms and had to be replaced.<\/em><\/li>\n<li style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>Rear Pannier:<\/strong> \u00a0Ortlieb Rear Pannier, Rear-Roller Classic &#8211; <em>Model no longer made<\/em><\/li>\n<li style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>Rear Rack Trunk:<\/strong> \u00a0Bontrager Interchange Deluxe Rear Trunk Bag<\/li>\n<li style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>Front Rack:<\/strong> Tubus Tara Front Rack &#8211;\u00a0<em>Upgraded from Axiom Journey Deluxe Front Racks used in earlier tour.<\/em><\/li>\n<li style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>Front Pannier:<\/strong> Ortlieb Front Pannier, Front-Roller City &#8211;\u00a0<em>Model no longer available.<\/em><\/li>\n<li style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>GPS<\/strong>: Garmin Oregon\u00a0600 &#8211;\u00a0<em>Upgraded from Dakota used in previous tour which couldn&#8217;t charge with USB. \u00a0NOTE: Because I was frequently disconnecting the usb cable the mini usb connection finally failed near on the last day of the tour (fortunately) and I was unable to retrieve my tracking information for the trip. \u00a0Garmin replaced the unit which was under warranty. \u00a0To eliminate the need to disconnect the cable in the future I have since replaced the cable with one with a right angle mini USB.<\/em><\/li>\n<li style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>Dynamo:<\/strong> \u00a0Shutter Precision SV-8 \u00a0<em>This continues to perform perfectly after two separate tours \u00a0and everyday commuting\u00a0~10,000 km<\/em><\/li>\n<li style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>USB Power supply:<\/strong> \u00a0E-Werk \u00a0<em>Worked well continually keeping my GPS charged.<\/em><\/li>\n<li style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>Front Light:<\/strong> \u00a0Phillips Saferide Dynamo LED Light 60 Lux<\/li>\n<li style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>Rear Light:<\/strong> Phillips\u00a0Lumring Dynamo LED &#8211; <em>no longer made. \u00a0This light was smashed when transporting the bike from St. Johns and has since been replaced.<\/em><\/li>\n<li style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>Rear Flasher:<\/strong> \u00a0Planet Bike Superflasher Turbo LED Rear Light<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>Tools\/Spares<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>Spare Foldable Tire:<\/strong> Schwalbe Marathon Mondial<\/li>\n<li style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>Chain\u00a0Link Remover<\/strong><\/li>\n<li style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>Chain length gage &#8211; <\/strong><em>used. \u00a0This may be unnecessary since chains should be replaced every 2,000 miles or so regardless. \u00a0 (A worn chain will wear out the cassette and chain rings.)<\/em><\/li>\n<li style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>Spoke Tightener:<\/strong> \u00a0&#8211; <em>needed to true wheels and to\u00a0replace two rear spokes.\u00a0<\/em><\/li>\n<li style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>Cassette Remover:<\/strong> \u00a0Stein Mini Cassette Lock &#8211; <em>needed to remove the rear cassette to replace inside spokes.<\/em><\/li>\n<li style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>Blue Locktight <\/strong>&#8211; <em>never used but light and small<\/em><\/li>\n<li style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>Spare water cage bolts<\/strong> &#8211; <em>fit muliple uses<\/em><\/li>\n<li style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>Spare spokes <\/strong>&#8211;<em> needed two<\/em><\/li>\n<li style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>Chain Oil <\/strong>&#8211; <em>Compact and comes with a physical keyboard. \u00a0The physical keyboard is\u00a0indispensable\u00a0when writing blogs. \u00a0The cellphone was left in\u00a0airplane\u00a0mode most of the time to conserve battery life.\u00a0<\/em><\/li>\n<li style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>Solar Panel and Cache Battery:<\/strong> \u00a0Voltaic\u00a0Fuse 6W Solar Charger &#8211; complete with guaze, bandages, tape, etc.<\/li>\n<li style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Sunscreen<\/li>\n<li style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Insect repellent<\/li>\n<li style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Diaper Rash Cream &#8211; <em>dynamite for rashes<\/em><\/li>\n<li style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Chamois Cream &#8211; <em>not needed. \u00a0This is useless for rashes.<\/em><\/li>\n<li style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Henry Loyd Cream &#8211;
